Why am I not showing up on Google Maps in Miami?

Your business exists, it has reviews, and it still doesn't come up when somebody searches your category nearby. Almost always it isn't Google — it's one of your own details telling it something else.

Google builds the map from three things: how close you are to the person searching, how well your listing matches what they asked, and how known you are across the web. You don't control the first. The second is what's usually wrong, and it's the fastest to fix: your listing's primary category.

First, the trap: searching for yourself

Almost everyone checks by searching from inside their own shop, on their own phone, signed into their own Google account. You always show up there: you're zero metres from yourself and Google already knows who you are. That tells you nothing.

The test that works is different: search your category ten or fifteen minutes away, the way a customer who doesn't know you would. If you're not there, that's the problem.

And a warning that saves a lot of frustration: on the map, proximity counts for a lot. Nobody shows up across all of Miami. The right question isn't «do I show in Miami?» — it's «do I show inside the radius of people who could actually come and buy?».

1 · The primary category — the most expensive mistake and the easiest

It's the field that carries the most weight and the one most often set wrong. A pizzeria filed under «restaurant» competes against every restaurant in its area instead of showing up when somebody types «pizza near me». A med spa filed under «spa» misses the searches for the treatment it actually sells.

The rule: the primary category describes what you are, not everything you offer. The rest goes in secondary categories, which exist for exactly that.

2 · The address: storefront or service area

If customers walk into a location, the address goes public and it has to be the real one. If you go to the customer — plumbing, cleaning, hauling — yours is a service area listing: the address is hidden and you declare the areas you cover.

Mixing the two is one of the most common reasons a listing stops showing or gets suspended outright: an address that turns out to be a mailbox, a coworking space you don't work from, or someone's house with the door shut.

3 · Data that doesn't match

Google checks what your listing says against your website and the directories you appear in. If your phone number is one thing on Google, another on your site and a third on a directory from six years ago, you're telling it that it isn't clear who you are. When it isn't sure, it shows someone else.

We'll say it from experience: our own Yelp profile still lists an old phone number, and it's on our list to fix. It happens in every house.

What has to be identical, character for character, everywhere: the name, the address and the phone.

4 · Reviews: it isn't only how many

Quantity counts, but so does how often they arrive and whether they're answered. Forty reviews from two years ago weigh less than twelve from the last quarter. And replying isn't politeness: it's text Google reads, and it's what the person choosing between you and the place next door actually sees.

What never pays: buying them. They get detected, wiped at once, and the drop shows.

5 · Duplicate and unverified listings

A business that moved, changed name or had two owners usually has two or three live listings at the same time. They split the reviews and the signals, and none of them ranks. You fix it by claiming the one with the history and asking for the others to be merged.

6 · What Google sees beyond the listing

The listing doesn't live alone. If your site never says which area you work in, if there's no page about your service in your city, or if the site takes forever to open, the listing is fighting uphill. That's local search work and it shows more than people expect.

How to check it in five minutes

  1. Search from far away. Ask someone fifteen minutes out to search your category «near me» without naming you. Write down who comes up.
  2. Look at your primary category. And at the categories of the three above you: it's public information and it's the fastest clue there is.
  3. Compare name, address and phone across your listing, your site and the first two directories that appear when you search your name.
  4. Search your own name on the map. If more than one listing of yours comes up, there's the duplicate.
  5. Count your reviews from the last quarter. If it's zero, that's this month's work.

Frequently asked

Why does my competitor show on the map and I don't, if we're on the same street?

Usually the primary category, or the number and freshness of reviews. At the same distance, proximity stops being what separates you and how well each listing matches the search takes over.

How long does a change to my Google listing take to show?

A category or data change usually reflects within days. Movement in map position takes weeks, because it also depends on reviews and on what other sites say about you.

Does hiding my address hurt me?

Not if your business genuinely is service-area and is set up that way. What hurts is the opposite: hiding the address of a place customers walk into, or declaring an address you don't work from.

Should I put my category in the business name?

Adding keywords to the name when they aren't part of the real name breaks Google's rules and is one of the most common reasons a listing gets suspended. The name is the one on your door and on your invoices.

What if my business has no location in Miami but serves it?

You set it up as a service-area business and declare the areas. Having a listing with no visible address is normal in hauling, plumbing, cleaning and at-home services.
